How to maintain a sauna stove
🕓 Viimati uuendatud: 3. Sep 2026
A sauna stove is the heart of the sauna. Regular maintenance helps ensure that the stove heats efficiently, lasts longer and remains safe to use. Fortunately, maintaining a sauna stove is not complicated – a few simple routines can make a big difference.
Why is sauna stove maintenance important?
A well-maintained sauna stove:
- provides better and softer steam;
- heats the sauna more efficiently;
- uses less firewood;
- has a longer lifespan.
Regular maintenance also helps prevent soot buildup and reduces potential fire hazards.
1. Empty the ash drawer regularly
Ash accumulates in and around the firebox after repeated use.
Too much ash can restrict airflow and reduce combustion efficiency.
Recommendations:
- empty the ash drawer after every few heating sessions;
- follow the stove manufacturer’s instructions regarding ash removal;
- always use a metal ash container, never a plastic one.

2. Check the sauna stones
Sauna stones are exposed to repeated heating, cooling and water, which can cause them to crack and deteriorate over time.
To maintain the stones:
- rearrange them occasionally;
- remove cracked or crumbling stones;
- replace the stones when necessary.
It is generally recommended to inspect sauna stones once or twice a year.
3. Clean the flue passages
Soot buildup is unavoidable when using a wood-burning sauna stove.
Cleaning the flue passages helps:
- improve the chimney draft;
- reduce the risk of chimney fires;
- maintain efficient combustion.
Depending on how frequently the sauna is used, the stove’s flue passages should generally be cleaned at least once a year.
4. Check the door, hinges and seals
Over time, the stove door, hinges and seals may wear.
Check regularly:
- whether the door closes properly;
- whether the hinges move smoothly;
- whether the glass door is clean and undamaged.
Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions when cleaning the glass and other stove components.
5. Check the safety distances
Make sure the required safety distances between the sauna stove and combustible materials are maintained.
This is particularly important if:
- changes have been made to the sauna after the stove was installed;
- the area surrounding the stove has been modified;
- new benches, shelves or wall coverings have been installed.
Always follow the safety distances specified in the installation instructions for your sauna stove.
How often should you maintain a sauna stove?
As a general guideline:
- ash drawer – after every few heating sessions;
- sauna stones – once or twice a year;
- flue passages – at least once a year;
- general inspection – before each heating season.
A well-maintained sauna stove lasts longer
Proper maintenance helps your sauna stove operate efficiently and safely. When the stove is in good condition, it also helps provide a more enjoyable sauna experience and pleasant steam.
